Eligibility Requirements
Admission to graduate study is granted to qualified applicants who are seeking degrees and to qualified post-baccalaureate students who may wish to upgrade specialty certifications or enhance their knowledge.


Minimum University Admission Requirements
Admission to graduate study is a two-part process. The Graduate Office of Admissions determines the applicant’s eligibility for admission to the University and the academic program determines the applicant’s admissibility to the degree program. Final admission to the University is subject to approval by the Graduate Office of Admissions.

Minimum University Application Requirements

  1. A Graduate online application. https://www.applyweb.com/famug/index.ftl
  2. A $30.00 non-refundable application fee.
  3. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education and have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework from an accredited institution.
  4. One official transcript (in a sealed envelope) from each college or university attended.  Transcripts can be submitted electronically from applicant institution to gradadmissions@famu.edu or physical copy can be mailed to the School of Graduate Studies.  For FAMU students applying to FAMU graduate programs need not submit transcripts for your FAMU course work. These transcripts will be requested internally.
  5. Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (verbal and quantitative score of 300) or General Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores (500); Scores must be sent mailed directly to the FAMU Graduate Admissions Office by the appropriate testing agency.  Note: All students must present GRE or GMAT scores prior to being admitted.

  7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL= 550/paper-based; 80 internet-based) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores (6.5) sent directly to FAMU from the Testing Service (International Applicants Only)
  8. Three letters of recommendation.
  9. Résumé, personal statement, essay, portfolio or other materials, if required by the program. (These documents must be submitted as part of the online application.)

Applicants who are interested in being considered for university fellowships or assistantships should apply by the priority deadline and make sure that their applications are complete, including all transcripts and other program application requirements.

No more than 10 percent of the graduate students admitted for an academic year may be admitted as exceptions to the criteria above. 

Timely application submission is important.  Students are urged to apply in the fall of their senior year since this allows for the evaluation and award processes to begin by January of each academic year.  Late application submission diminishes the applicant’s opportunities for admission and financial awards.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

FAMU encourages foreign students with superior scholastic records, adequate English proficiency, and an earned bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university to apply for admission to a designated program in Graduate Studies and Research. Such students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above at the undergraduate level or the equivalent, as determined by the Admissions Office and must submit GRE scores.

  2. A Residency Classification form (submit with online application);
  3. A $30.00 non-refundable application fee is required of all applicants for each application submitted;
  4. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education and have earned a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work taken while  enrolled as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor’s degree; OR Hold a graduate degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better;
  5. One official transcript (in a sealed envelope) from each college or university attended.  (FAMU students  applying to FAMU graduate programs need not submit transcripts for your FAMU course work. These transcripts will be requested internally.)
  6. Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores or General Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores; (These scores must be sent directly to FAMU by the appropriate testing agency.) Your application will not be processed without GRE scores.
  7. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL= 550/paper-based; 80 internet-based) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores (6.5) sent directly to FAMU from the Testing Service if  an applicant is from a country in which English is not the official language, or if an applicant's degree is not from an accredited U.S. institution, or if an applicant did not earn a degree in a country in which English is the only official language, or if the applicant is from a university where English is the only official language of instruction;
  8. Three Letters of Recommendation; Complete this section of the online application;
  9. Résumé, essay, portfolio or other materials, if required by the program; (These must be submitted as part of the online application.)
  10. A completed Certification of Financial Responsibility form indicating your commitment (e.g. from your parents, government, or others) to financially support your education;
  11. A completed Immunization form. To expedite the processing of your application materials, please download and print the Immunization Form here and mail the completed form to the address specified on the form. This form is not used in making an admissions decision.  However, you will not be allowed to enroll at FAMU without submitting the Immunization Form.

A translation and evaluation of work completed at each institution is required. Transcripts should be sent to one of the agencies listed below for a course-by-course evaluation. Please request the agency to send the evaluation directly to FAMU. Please note that if you have earned 60 or more semester or 90 quarter hours at a postsecondary U.S. institution, you will not need to have your transcript evaluated.

ReAdmission ApPlicants

If you were previously admitted and enrolled in a graduate program at FAMU but have been absent for two or more consecutive semesters, you may apply for readmission to the same graduate program. The graduate application for admission is available online for your convenience. Before you begin the application, however, check for your program's application deadlines and requirements.  Readmission students do not have to resubmit an application fee.

Test scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS) and transcripts do not need to be resubmitted. GRE/GMAT scores are valid for 5 years from your test date; TOEFL/IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from your test date. The readmission application and all application requirements must be submitted by the stated application deadline.

When a student applies for readmission, the program will determine if the student will be readmitted into the program.

 

Online Degree Programs
 

Master of Business Administration (MBA)
The FAMU MBA program gives online students access to a broad array of innovative opportunities with special emphasis on team collaboration, including work abroad and graduate case competitions. Our extensive network of corporate employers also helps to further our students' exposure to areas ranging from accounting to supply chain management.

Master of Public Health (MPH)
FAMU features the first MPH degree offered online from an HBCU. We offer the only accredited public health program currently housed within a College of Pharmacy, providing a unique synergy that links the fields of Public Health and healthcare, and boast a strong training and research focus on health disparities that disproportionately impacts the poor and underserved.  Public health practice will be the specialty area of the FAMU online MPH Program.

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
Choose FAMU's online MSN program and get the clinical expertise your degree requires wherever you live while you complete classroom credit hours online.  Offering an array of clinical specialties like gerontology, women's health and more, this nationally accredited program emphasizes local clinical work that prepares you for workplace realities in nursing.

Students are classified as non-degree seeking students if they have not been formally admitted into a graduate program and have not been denied admission to the University. Non-degree students are applicants who have completed at least a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university in the United States and are not working towards a graduate degree. They may be taking courses for their own enrichment, for Florida certification for education, or to complete a FAMU graduate certificate program.   Please note that not all graduate degree programs accept non-degree students. Before you apply for admission as a non-degree student, contact the program director for the graduate program that offers the course you want to take. Ask if the program accepts non-degree students and if specific enrollment instructions apply for graduate level courses. 

Non-degree seeking graduate students are limited to earning 12 credit hours.  Any student, who attempts to exceed the 12 credit hour limit without being accepted into a degree-seeking program at the University, will be placed on a registration hold. The hold can only be cleared upon producing evidence of admission to a degree seeking program.  Courses taken as a non-degree seeking student may be used to fulfill degree program requirements, with the approval of the appropriate academic unit.

Please note that non-degree admission or admission to a graduate certificate program at FAMU does not guarantee admission into a graduate program. International students are not eligible for non-degree status unless they hold an eligible visa.

Non-Degree seeking students will be charged for tuition and fees according to the FAMU Tuition and Fee Schedule.  In general, non-degree seeking students are not eligible for financial aid, assistantships, or fellowships.

A graduate GPA will be calculated for non-degree students based on the graduate courses the student takes at FAMU while in the non-degree status. Non-degree seeking students whose graduate GPA falls below a 3.0 will not be allowed to continue taking more graduate courses.

The FAMU Registrar’s Office, which processes the non-degree seeking student applications must receive the applications and all supporting documents electronically by the stated application deadline.

The application must be accompanied by a signed advisement form from the Graduate Coordinator of the academic program. The application fee for non-degree seeking students is $5.00.  Applications are accepted until the end of the Add/Drop period.  However, additional registration fees may be assessed if the student applies during the Late Registration Period.

Applying for Florida Residency
For the purpose of assessing registration and tuition fees, a student shall be classified as a “resident or nonresident.” A “resident for tuition purposes" is a person who qualifies for the in-state tuition rate. A “nonresident for tuition purposes” is a person who does not qualify for the in-state tuition rate.

At FAMU, there are three offices responsible for the initial review of residency for tuition purposes under Florida Statute 240.1201 and Board of Education Rule 6C-7.005. These offices are 1) The Office of Admissions, 2) Graduate Admissions and 3) The Office of the University Registrar. The first office determines residency for all first-time-on-campus students. The Office of the University Registrar is the only office to which students can apply for changes in residency once they are enrolled. First-time-on-campus students will be classified in accordance with the information on their applications, including the “Florida Resident Affidavit” on the last page of the application, providing no other information is available calling into question the information on the application.

To qualify as a Florida resident for tuition purposes in accordance with Rule 6C-7.005 of the Florida Administrative Code, students must: be a United States citizen, resident alien, parolee, Cuban national, Vietnamese refugee, or other refugee or granted asylum as designated by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. There are several ways to obtain residency.

Academic Common Market
The Academic Common Market (ACM) offers in-state funding to students from certain states within the ACM. Students who qualify under this option will be required to check section "L" on the residency form and submit it to the Graduate Admissions Office (469 Tucker Hall).

Residency for Graduate Students on Appointment
Graduate research and teaching assistants who are United States citizens or permanent residents are eligible for in-state residency for tuition purposes. Students must take the appropriate action to become in-state residents for tuition purposes at the beginning of their first semester of enrollment.
